Review of Balyakalasakhi
Author: Vaikom Muhammad Basheer
Publisher: Dc Books (Modern Editions)
My Review:
Balyakalasakhi (meaning Childhood Companion) is one of the most emotional and realistic love stories in Malayalam literature. Written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, the novel is inspired by real-life emotions and experiences, making it deeply touching and timeless.
The story revolves around Majeed and Suhra, who grow up together as childhood companions in a small village. From a very young age, they share an innocent, pure bond filled with affection, trust, and silent love. However, as they grow older, society, poverty, misunderstandings, and rigid traditions slowly begin to separate them.
Majeed is sensitive and emotional, while Suhra is gentle, loving, and deeply devoted. Despite their strong bond, life repeatedly pulls them apart. Suhra is married off due to social pressure, and Majeed is left heartbroken. Their love never fades, but circumstances never allow it to be fulfilled. Majeed spends his life carrying the pain of loss, regret, and unspoken love.
The novel does not exaggerate emotions; instead, it presents love in its most natural and painful form. Basheer shows how real love is often silent, sacrificial, and unfinished. The simplicity of the language makes the suffering feel more real, and readers can deeply connect with the characters’ emotions.
Balyakalasakhi is not just a love story—it is a reflection of real life, where love does not always end in happiness. It highlights how society, fate, and time can destroy even the purest relationships. The novel leaves readers with a heavy heart, reminding them that some loves are meant to be remembered, not lived.
My Comment on this Book:
Balyakalasakhi touched my heart deeply because it portrays love in its purest and most painful form. The story feels real and relatable, showing how true love often remains unfulfilled due to circumstances beyond our control. Basheer’s simple yet powerful writing made me feel the characters’ pain and taught me that some emotions stay with us forever.
