Review of The Kite Runner
Author: Khaled Hosseini
Publisher: Riverhead Books
My Review:
The Kite Runner is a deeply emotional and powerful novel that explores friendship, betrayal, guilt, and redemption against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s changing history. The story is narrated by Amir, a boy from a wealthy family in Kabul, and focuses on his relationship with Hassan, the son of his father’s servant. Though Hassan belongs to a lower social class, he is loyal, kind-hearted, and brave, while Amir struggles with insecurity and fear.
The novel begins with their childhood, where kite flying becomes a symbol of joy, competition, and love. However, a tragic incident during a kite-flying tournament changes their lives forever. Amir witnesses Hassan being brutally wronged but fails to stand up for him due to his own cowardice. This moment becomes the central wound of the story, haunting Amir throughout his life.
As political unrest and war force Amir and his father to flee to the United States, Amir grows into adulthood carrying the heavy burden of guilt. Years later, he receives a chance to return to Afghanistan and make amends for his past mistakes. This journey back is dangerous and emotionally challenging, but it gives Amir an opportunity to confront his fears, face the truth, and seek redemption.
The novel also highlights themes of social inequality, the effects of war, the bond between fathers and sons, and the idea that it is never too late to do the right thing. Through vivid storytelling and emotional depth, The Kite Runner shows how a single choice can shape a lifetime and how forgiveness—both of others and oneself—can bring healing.
My Comment on this Book:
The Kite Runner is a heart-touching and unforgettable novel that made me reflect deeply on friendship, courage, and responsibility. The emotions felt real, and the characters stayed with me long after I finished reading. This book taught me that true bravery is not about strength, but about standing up for what is right and having the courage to correct our mistakes. It inspired me to be more honest, compassionate, and brave in my own life.
