Review of The Alchemist
Author: Paulo Coelho
Publisher: Harpercollins Publishers
My Review:
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a philosophical novel that follows the journey of a young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago. Santiago lives a simple life, travelling with his sheep and enjoying his freedom. One night, he repeatedly dreams of a treasure hidden near the pyramids of Egypt. Curious about the meaning of the dream, he meets a gypsy woman and later a mysterious king named Melchizedek, who encourages him to follow his “Personal Legend,” or true purpose in life.
Santiago sells his sheep and begins his journey across unfamiliar lands. Along the way, he faces loss, fear, and uncertainty, including being robbed in a foreign city. Instead of giving up, he learns to work, observe, and grow wiser. He meets several people who teach him important lessons about patience, effort, faith, and listening to one’s heart.
As Santiago travels through the desert, he learns about the concept of the “Soul of the World,” which connects all living things. He realizes that dreams are not just wishes but paths that require courage and commitment. His journey becomes less about finding material treasure and more about understanding himself and the world around him.
In the end, Santiago learns that true treasure lies not only in wealth but in self-discovery, experience, and the courage to pursue one’s dreams. The book gently reminds readers that life itself is a journey, and every challenge helps shape a person’s purpose.
My Comment on this Book:
I found The Alchemist to be a calm and thoughtful book that can be enjoyed by adult readers. The story is simple but carries deep meaning about life, goals, and self-belief. The writing style is warm and clear, making it easy to understand without being overly emotional. This book encourages quiet reflection and patience. It reminds us that true success comes from understanding ourselves and trusting our own journey.
